A BIG SPILL OFF SANTA BARBARA’S COASTLINE HIGHLIGHTS KEN EADE’S NOVEL

KEN EADE’S BRENT MARKS THRILLER POIGNANTLY LETS US KNOW WHY WE SHOULD NEVER SAY, “JUST ANOTHER OIL SPILL.

After a large oil spill threatens the coastline of Santa Barbara, Lawyer Brent Marks’ girlfriend Rebecca takes on the big oil companies. Initial victories in her class action case lead to her all-out declaration of war against fossil fuels. When she turns up missing, a suspected victim of foul play, Brent finds himself questioning whether to continue with the case.

HERE’S A LOOK AT THE REALITY BEHIND THE BOOK. LIKE ALL OF KEN EADE’S MAJOR THRILLERS, REALITY IS JUST A SHORT STEP AWAY.  NOVELS SUCK YOU IN TO THE HUMAN, EMOTIONAL SIDE OF REALITIES THAT OFTEN SEEM ABSTRACT IN DRY REPORTS AND STATISTICAL TABULATIONS OF TROUBLING REALITIES. BUT NOT IN THIS VIDEO.

THE BIG SPILL’S PLOT CHALLENGES THE DANGERS OF BIG OIL AND THE DIFFICULTIES IN TAKING IT ON AS A CAUSE? HERE’S WHAT KEN EADE SAYS ABOUT HIS TAKE ON RESEARCHING THE REFUGIO OIL SPILL.

‘The Refugio Oil Spill in May 2015 was not the largest oil spill by volume compared to its counterpart in 1969 or the Gulf of Mexico spill in 2010, but it was big enough to deposit over 142,000 gallons of crude oil into one of the most biologically diverse coastlines on the west coast and caused hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of damage. The spill was blamed on a negligently maintained corroded pipeline which remains closed to this day, but it highlights the dangers of offshore drilling in general, especially in this day and age where we are supposed to be lessening our carbon footprint. In my lifetime I have watched the government manipulated by special interests get away with a lot of things, offshore drilling being only one of them, but the thing that really surprises me is the lack of public outcry at the poisoning of our air, water and oceans, when it is entirely unnecessary to do so.

Offshore oil drilling specifically and drilling in general is contradictory to the policy of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and lowering our impact on climate change. The Gulf of Mexico spill alone proved that the oil companies’ modern technology, which they claim makes offshore drilling safe, cannot avert such as disaster, especially at such depths. And despite all the claims of safety, the transport of crude is unsafe and has resulted in many disastrous spills. Despite the fact that it is not safe and not environmentally sound, the Obama administration is considering permits for the southeast coast of the Atlantic, where reserves are estimated at 3 billion barrels of oil and 25 trillion feet of natural gas. Leasing has been scheduled for 2021. There are also plans to allow more leasing in the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico.

The most surprising thing I came across in my research for this book was that, in 2013 California state legislators received reports that Santa Barbara channel offshore rig operators had been fracking off the coast since 2010. The lawmakers called for a federal investigation to look into it, declaring, “Hydraulic fracturing poses great potential dangers to our sea life and all California residents. This controversial well stimulation technique needs greater scrutiny, particularly when it potentially jeopardizes our coastal way of life. Whatever your position on climate change, it cannot be denied that, despite big oil’s claims of safety, there continue to be adverse consequences to the environment, local economies, and marine life from offshore drilling and these disasters are 100% preventable by not allowing offshore oil in the first place.

THE BIG SPILL, the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill, sparked the green revolution in America, making way for the most comprehensive environmental legislation that the country has ever known. The first Earth Day was celebrated after the disaster. What happened to those environmentally conscious individuals? They couldn’t have all turned to money when the green revolution was forgotten in favor of the greenback revolution. We know this because more people in the country got poorer and the wealth has been concentrated in the hands of the one percent. We need to get back on the green bandwagon now, before it’s too late.

HERE’S AN EXCERPT OF THE BIG SPILL WHERE ATTORNEY, BRENT MARKS, FIRST HEARS OF AN EVENT WHICH WILL LEAD HIM INTO HIS NEXT CASE- A MISSING GIRL FRIEND POINTING TO HER INVOLVEMENT IN DEALING WITH A GRAVE ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE

Normally on a Friday afternoon like this day, Brent would head to the office to make his to-do list for Monday morning. Throughout the fluctuating degrees of his personal life, which varied from the company of his cat and an occasional outing with his friend, Jack Ruder, who performed the role of investigator in his business life, to passionate, yet seemingly fleeting relationships with strong and interesting women, the normally tenacious Brent had always made the rule for himself not to bring work home, unless he was in trial. But today was different. Brent and his his new girlfriend, Rebecca Bekker, an ex-client (Brent also had a rule never to date clients) had planned to take the rest of the week off for a romantic getaway up the scenic California coast. All of that changed when he received her frantic call.

“It’s another oil spill. Don’t they realize they’re killing our ocean?”

“Rebecca?”

“Sorry, Brent, I’m a public volunteer. I’ve got cleanup duty.”

“How long is that going to take?”

“I don’t know. Depends on how many gallons of crude oil those assholes have dumped this time. Sorry but we have to cancel our plans for this week.”

“Well, can I join you? With the cleanup?”

“I’d like to say yes, but we take special training for this. Not anyone can do it. I’ve got to go, Brent, they need me.”

Brent said good-bye to Rebecca and disconnected. She was the daughter of a client of his who had been murdered, and who had amassed a sizeable fortune before he had passed on. This had left Rebecca a very rich young lady, who wanted for nothing, which allowed her to concentrate on her passion – charitable work. She was an anti-war activist on the one hand and a champion for veterans’ rights on the other, but her strongest passion was protection of the environment. Rebecca was the opposite of what you would expect from a poor little rich girl. Magnanimous as she was alluring, her dark, doe-like eyes could stir up a ravenous appetite in any man. Those who tried to pierce her outer veil of beauty with the aspiration of grabbing onto her heartstrings, and, thus, her purse strings, were often disappointed by the sharp wit of her twenty-four year old mind. Brent had not been, and neither had she.

EXCERPT FROM DECREE OF FINALITY

“My husband and I never considered divorce… murder sometimes, but never divorce -Joyce Brothers

“What troubles me is that you don’t have a prenuptial agreement.” “What can I say? I was in love.” “Falling in love can be like walking a tightrope – exhilarating but dangerous. A prenup is like a safety net.” Taylor fidgeted in his seat. “I know. It’s just not very romantic to shove a contract in front of your fiancé berfore you pop the question…

“What about the house?” Taylor had a nice spread in Montecito with a hefty mortgage that was easy for him to handle with the income from his investments, but when half of them disappeared, it was going to be tough to hold onto. “That was purchased during the marriage as well, and you’re both on title. You can make her an offer to buy her out, or you’ll have to sell it and split the proceeds.”

“She says she’s never leaving it.” “Then, that’s another thing we have to contend with. But you’ll get through it. There is life after divorce. My mentor, Charles Stinson, used to say, ‘Now you can start paying for it with money instead of blood.’ Tell me a little about your wife. I like to know who I’m dealing with.” Taylor took a deep breath, thoughtfully. “She fooled me.” “What do you mean?” “What I mean is that she comes off to everyone as this nice, sweet, charming girl. But in reality that’s all a charade. She’s more like the witch with the poison apple.”

KEN EADE EXPLORES A VERY GRIPPING CASE OF “ABSOLUTE INTOLERANCE”

SOME CASES CAN SKIRT THE EDGES OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST. IN THIS NOVEL, BRENT MARKS, AUTHOR KEN EADE’S PROTAGONIST I, TAKES ON THE CASE OF A SUSPECT ACCUSED OF MURDERING HIS FORMER CLIENTS, A GAY MARRIED COUPLE, MURDERED IN THEIR HOME.’

Sometimes a good lawyer must face potential conflicts in his work. After a gay couple had enlisted attorney, Brent Marks, who advocated successfully for their marriage, they were found murdered in their home. Apparently, the murderer was a homophobic serial killer who committed repugnant deeds in the name of spirituality. What should he do when a suspect in the murder case, a known religious extremist, comes to Brent for help? The only way Markscan justify his involvement is to actually solve the case himself.

EXCERPT FROM ABSOLUTE INTOLERANCE

FOLLOWING A POSTPONEMENT OF A COURT TO RENDER A DECISION ON A CASE INVOLVING THE LEGALITY OF GAY MARRIAGE, ATTORNEY BRENT MARKS ATTEMPTS TO LEAVE THE COURT BUILDING BUT, ON THE WAY OUT, ENCOUNTERS AN EAGER- AND LOUD- GROUP OF REPORTERS….

The judge went on to call her next case, and Brent packed up his briefcase and joined his clients as they left the courtroom, dejected. Brent waved off questions being shouted by a crowd of reporters who had congregated in the corridor outside the courtroom. Losers make lousy press conferences. Penner, however, eagerly jumped into the fray like he was falling off the stage into a mosh pit. As Brent and his clients trudged away, before he could even have the chance to console them, Joshua Banks, a bible-thumping, homophobic, religious fanatic, blocked their path. Brent had had run-ins with Banks several times, to the point where he had been forced to obtain a restraining order against him because of death threats. But he was mainly a zealot and a windbag who was always preaching

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure!” Banks proclaimed, lifting his finger in front of them as if he was giving a sermon.

“Step aside, Mr. Banks. Do I have to get another restraining order against you?”

“Men committed acts with other men, and received in themselves due penalty for their perversion!”

“Who is this guy?”

“He’s just a nut job, James. I’ve dealt with him before.”

Banks stepped out of the way and the three proceeded down the escalator to the lobby of the courthouse.

“He’s a religious fanatic. Part of the group opposing gay marriage.”

As they descended, they could hear the echoes of Banks yelling verses from the Bible.

“These dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings!” “He’s really harmless. Just ignore him.”

“Sounds like he’s got a screw loose,” said Jim.

Brent nodded. “More than one screw, I think.”

The bellowing began to fade from their ears as they descended.

“Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves, nor the greedy or drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God!”

“I guess it’s official, Jim. We’re both going to hell.”

“At least we’ll be there together.”

A VERY UNTIDY HOA MURDER NOVEL: EVERY RESIDENT A SUSPECT

BRENT MARKS NEVER THOUGHT THAT THE CLIENT HE WAS DEFENDING AGAINST FORECLOSURE WOULD BE
ACCUSED OF MURDER…. AGAINST THE PRESIDENT OF THE HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION.”

But that’s what happens in this 3rd novel in the legal suspense thriller by novelist/attorney/human rights and environmental activist, Ken Eade.  As D. Donovan of the Midwest Book Review says:

“There is big a difference between crime and detective novels and courtroom dramas. In one, the action takes place on the streets; and in the other, the main story takes place in the courtroom.  HOA Wirerepresents the latter, and will appeal to fans of Grisham and any other writer who spins a solid yarn based on courtroom drama and realistic experiences.” (READ THE WHOLE REVIEW HERE)

EXCERPT FROM THE SUSPENSE THRILLER, HOA WIRE

“Homeowner’s Association: the means whereby people who own homes are able to transfer their rights to the neighborhood control freaks.” -Ron Brackin

The nightmare had begun with the color of their house. A year ago, Nancy and Burt received a notice requesting them to paint the exterior of their townhome, which included a detailed list of instructions. They just turned over the instructions to their painter, and asked him to paint the house the same color as the one down the street. It was a pleasant powder blue, and they had always loved it. The painter took a sample from the neighbor’s house and matched the color perfectly. The only problem was, unbeknownst to Burt and Nancy, they were not allowed to change the former color of their home. It messed with the “palette” and was a violation of the HOA rules. Nancy and Burt were happy until the HOA sent them a “Notice of Violation,” that began a series of legal battles with mounting costs and attorney’s fees. It didn’t take long for the HOA’s fees to pile up higher than a New York City high rise.

Nancy slumped onto the couch and Nelson jumped onto her lap as if he were spring-loaded, and started to play the “biting game.” It was his favorite. He charged at Nancy on the couch, and she pushed him away, over and over and over again, and each time, Nelson gently bit at her fingers and growled as he delighted in the attention.

After Nelson calmed down and curled into a tiny ball on the couch, Nancy’s mind kept going back to the HOA notice. She and Burt had exhausted all their savings fighting, litigating, and finally settling with them on the paint case after a lengthy mediation. The curiosity nagged at her until she couldn’t stand it anymore, although she knew what to expect. Because of the legal bills, mounting expenses, loss of Burt and the economy, the HOA assessments had piled up. Not only that, the Association had added “special assessments” for improvements to the common areas, as well as a ton of attorney’s fees. Nancy simply could not afford to pay for them all. She ripped open the envelope to reveal her greatest fear. It read, “Notice of Foreclosure Sale.”

KEN EADE’S NOVEL, “PREDATORY KILL,” PUTS A BITE INTO SO-CALLED PREDATORY LENDING

HOW DOES A PREDATORY LENDER MORPH INTO A PREDATORY KILLER?
-Read Kenneth Eade’s Novel and Find Out-

This Brent Marks thriller features a time when Marks has decided to utilize his talents to serve the public instead eating from the trough of merely bread and butter cases- as in DUIs and divorce. After embarking on an intriguing case involving predatory lending by a bank that led to a wrongful disclosure on a home owned by a client’s  parents, the straightforward social justice case morphed into a focus on a capital crime when the client’s  parents were murdered. Were the banks somehow involved in the murder? If so, that would be taking the term, “predatory’” to its original etymological meaning- as in “kill?”-the tactics of ruthless, murderous loan shark?

,

EXCERPT FROM “PREDATORY KILL”

Brent entered his office, sat down behind his plush mahogany desk, and picked up the phone. “Hello, this is Brent Marks.” The eerie voice on the other end was cold and inhuman. “Do you know how fast a bullet goes, Counselor?” it asked. “Who is this?” “Seventeen hundred feet per second. At that velocity, it will crack open your skull and splatter your brains all over your wall like a watermelon being hit by a sledge hammer.” The caller cackled like a wounded chicken. Brent quickly switched on the recording device to the receiver. He had bought that baby to record threats from ex-husbands whose wives had obtained restraining orders against them, but which Brent had always refused to dismiss, even in cases of so called “reconciliation.” “I don’t think I got your name, mister?” The voice responded with a maniacal chuckle, which turned into a full blown belly laugh, like Vincent Price in the final stanza of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. “No judge in the world can stop a bullet, Counselor. No piece of paper can do that.” “This conversation is really interesting, but if I don’t have your name, I…” “Think hard.” “I’m not going to play games with you.” “Oh, this is not a game. I assure you. I’m just giving you a little preview. Wherever you go, I’ll be there. When you’re at the corner at Starbucks, having your mocha grande in the morning before going to court, I’ll be there. You won’t see me, but I’ll be there. All it takes is one shot – one shot in the head.” The phone vibrated from the eerie laughter. “And why would you want to shoot me?” “I am a servant of the Lord, Counselor. I do His work.”

KEN EADE GOES “TO RUSSIA WITH LOVE”

KEN EADE, NOVELIST
– IN THE TRADITION OF GEORGE ORWELL
BUT THE GENRE OF TOM CLANCY & JOHN GRISHAM-

Obviously, the title is an homage to the famous suspense thriller by Ian Fleming, but the contents and direction of the story are unique to novelist, environmentalist and attorney, Ken Eade. Ken Eade likes to write about things he has thoroughly researched or things he knows first hand. And the fact is, that Ken Eade knows Russia first-hand and has visited there many times. He also knows the subject of GMOs very well, which has been part of his protagonist/scientist’s main professional concern in the first novel  in this exciting sequel.

Ken Eade, although mainly a fiction writer, has a passion for reality and social justice.  Formerly a full-time attorney, he now devotes much of his time to prodigious work in creating compelling suspense thrillers in series format. His novels focus on environmental and social issues and are meant to entertain but also to address the emotional intelligence of his readers- as he deals with issues that beg for more attention but have been lost in the sleepwalking mentality fostered by conventional, morally rootless media.  In this respect, he follows in the socially conscious traditions of such diverse writers, older and newer, as Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, George Orwell, Emile Zola, Leo Tolstoy, Upton Sinclair- but in the genre of crime, war and suspense writers like Sir Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie,  Ian Fleming, John Grisham, Tom Clancy and Lee Child, The genre of suspense thriller is an intentional choice for Ken Eade wants to capture a broad and diverse readership in one of the most well-loved type of popular literature.  But make no make mistake about it, his work, although filled with the mayhem and excitement of this genre in the second category, he never forgets the intention of authors in the first.

“To Russia with Love” is the second book in Ken Eade’s Involuntary Spy suspense thriller. The involuntary spy, a scientist named Seth Rogan who, in the first book in the series, took on the mammoth Seed King agrobiz Bohometh, Germanat, which was willing to unleash dangerous GMOs on the public, now must return to Russia where his secret agent girlfriend has disappeared.  The setting is the beginning of dangerous civil war in Ukraine and Rogan must pursue his quest amongst the chaos of clashing political powers and the constant threat of increasing violence. All during this time, Rogan suspects that Germanat has inserted himself into the war and wonders if the giant company is responsible for her disappearance.

TO RUSSIAN WITH LOVE
-THE ADVENTURE BEGINS-

There is no monopoly on common sense,
On either side of the political fence,
We share the same biology,
Regardless of ideology.
Believe me when I say to you,
I hope the Russians love their children too.

Sting

Seth Rogan woke up with a feeling that something was wrong this morning. In fact, he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed every morning for the past three weeks, since his girlfriend, Natalia Andropova (nicknamed Natasha) had not been in it. It had been very comfortable in this Hawaiian paradise as long as she had been here, but now she was gone and the room seemed empty – home was not home anymore.

Natasha’s boss had called and had sent her on a special assignment. That boss was none other than Vladimir Putin, arguably the most, or second most, powerful man in the world. Natasha served as an undercover agent for the Russian Federal Security Service, the FSB – the successor to the old KGB.

Seth had woken up in a foul mood every day since she had left, and for the first time since he had settled in this island paradise, he was bored. It didn’t make sense. Who could be bored with a beautiful house on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii? He had his biological research to keep him busy, and he talked to her on the phone every day. Still it was not the same.

Since she had left, the first order of business was the telephone, something that Seth normally found to be a nuisance. Natasha was in Moscow presently, which was 14 hours ahead of Hawaii, so hers was the voice that Seth woke up to every morning and the one that put him to bed, but he had not heard from her in four days, and that made sleeping more of a chore than a necessity.

He had spent his waking hours, which were expanding due to his worries, calling her cell phone and leaving messages, texting an emailing, but Natasha had not responded. That was not like her, as she had been regularly checking in with him. Something was not right.

Seth looked at the clock. 9:30 already. That’s odd, by now she should have called. Five minutes later, the phone rang. He rolled over and grabbed the phone.

“Hey baby.”

“Seth, it’s me – Abramov. The voice of Boris Abramov was a familiar one; one he knew from the days when he had lived undercover in Russia.

“Boris, I thought you were Natasha. I’m so glad you called.”

“She’s missing Seth.”

“Missing?” Seth’s heart surged as if it would jump out of his throat. “What are you talking about?”

“Someone has put out an anonymous missing persons report. We are looking for her.”

Seth was in a panic. He could not think. He got up from his bed and paced the floor.

“But Natasha’s supposed to be in Moscow.”

“She arrived in Kiev two weeks ago. She was to attend agricultural conference.”

“I know, I know, I was going to the same conference. But the conference was in Moscow. Why was she in Kiev?”

“They sent her there on assignment.”

“What kind of assignment?”

“I can’t talk about it over phone. Can you come to Kiev?”

“I’ll be on the next plane. How do I reach you?”

“Not me. You will meet Victor Godinov, our man with Russian Embassy.”

“What about the police? Are they working on it?”

“They say they are – Detective Ivan Petrenko is in charge of case. I’m not sure what help he may be, but I would like you to be on ground in Kiev in case we need you – in case Natasha needs you.”

“Of course, I’m there.”

Seth frantically wrote down the information, fired up his laptop, and booked a ticket to Kiev. It was over 21 hours of flying with layovers in San Francisco and Munich – 21 hours more that Natasha would be missing, and every second of that would count.

When traffic came to a standstill, Ike and Snookie decided to get off the highway and try to find gas. It used to be easy. Stop into a gas station, which you could find on almost any block, gas up your car, and step inside to grab some snacks in the mini market. All of that had changed. The first challenge was to find a station that had power and was open. When they finally did, there was a line. The government hadn’t even had the chance to impose rationing, yet. And the price was subject to fluctuation as you waited in line. Ike and Snookie pulled in behind a line of cars waiting two blocks ahead of a large filling station. After about an hour of waiting, the station put up a sign, Out of Gas. Then all hell broke loose. First there was an orchestra of horn honking. Then several cars screeched out of the line and peeled off down the road. It was even worse at the front of the line. There a big man, wearing a tank top which exposed huge biceps covered with tattoos, protested.

“I’ve been waiting here for over two hours. You can’t be out of gas!” He ran to the double glass doors of the station, which were locked, and furiously pounded on them. “Open up! You’ve got a whole mini market full of stuff in there!” The man banged harder on the doors and the terrified Indian clerk inside cowered behind the counter. “You god-damned sand nigger! Turn the pumps back on and open up the store!” The man’s anger was building to a crescendo. He paced back and forth in front of the store, swearing. Then he hammered on the on the window again. Finally he ran to his pickup truck, got in, fired it up, and drove it head on into the store, crashing through the glass. He jumped out of the car and Ike and Snookie heard a series of shots. Ike got out of line and accelerated away. “We’ve got to get out of here!” “Is it really worth risking your life for a tank of gas or bag of potato chips?” “I guess, if you’re hungry enough. You saw it yourself. There was a run on the markets. And when they ran out of food, the people wouldn’t accept it, so they just tore them apart.”

A NOVEL TRULY “BEYOND ALL RECOGNITION”

KEN EADE, MASTER OF SUSPENSE THAT THRILLS AND AWAKENS

To many, the signature reality behind Ken Eade’s new novel, “Beyond All Recognition” may be a lot too handle. I say “signature reality” because Ken Eade’s fictional creations always embody a intrinsic connection to social and political realities that Ken Eade is committed to expose- not just intellectually, but emotionally, through the power of a supercharged suspense thriller.

Perhaps this novel could be, for some, even more shocking than his others- because the subject of death squads is so inimical to the normal American conscience, however tarnished or challenged through recent obstructions to our citizen and human rights. In “Beyond All Recognition,” attorney/protagonist Brent Marks, star of the continuing Brent Marks Legal Thriller Series, takes on a case defending Captain Ryan Bennington, whose company had killed various suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists years before and is now accused of recklessly killing harmless civilians. The reality that brought these accusations is the basis of a cover-up going to some of the darkest, most opaque secrets of the military-industrial alliance that fomented the Iraq war in the first place.

Trying to find out what Captain Bennington did that would warrant his placement before a military tribunal with the severest possible charges and consequences if convicted, Brent Marks and the Brody, the JAG assigned to Bennington’s case, strongly questioned their client about the incident.

Ruan  replied. “I did what every other combat officer in the field does. I studied the intel that came in, they confirmed hostiles that were targeted, and gave the order. “They gave us Level B LOAC training, but we’re not lawyers, man.”

Brody chimed in, “Law of Armed Conflict training.”

“Everything looked legit and they’re the fucking brass. This order came from all the way up, and now they’ve been caught with their pants down and they’re looking at the bottom for a goat.”

“What happened, Ryan?”

Ryan put his face in his hands, sighed, and looked up with heavy eyes.

“Man, we were set up! I’m telling you, civilians get hit all the time! If they turn out to be unarmed, Command tells us to put drop weapons on their bodies.”

“What did your Command tell you about the ROE?”

Ryan looked at Brody curiously. “What?”

“Did your Command authorize deadly force?”

“Of course, man! We were supposed to kill everybody and recover their weapons. Intelligence and combat support marked each house. We were ordered to go in at night under cover of darkness, knock down the doors and shoot any military age male who didn’t obey orders to surrender. You’ve heard of ‘one false move and you’re dead?’ That was it.”

Ryan’s head fell back down in his hands.

Brent prodded him. “Go on, Ryan.” “

Man, I went through years of therapy to get these images out of my head. Now you want me to bring them all back?”

“We can’t help you unless you tell us.”

“You can’t help me, man. This shit is bigger than all of us. There were no Al-Qaeda terrorists in that village and no weapons just like there were no WMDs in the whole fucking country. So I guess that makes everyone in boots on the ground a murderer, huh?”

KEN EADE’S NOVEL, “KILLER.COM,” REFLECTS THE TWO EDGES OF THE INTERNET

The Internet can be a rather wild ride when it permits anonymity and shields third party posters from defamation in the US.
The subject is painful and provokes questions about the viability of unrestrained free speech. On the other hand, even if one is sympathetic with the freedom which the Internet allows- clear thinking is needed because, for some, there have been tragic personal consequences for reputations of persons and businesses being sacrificed for this unlicensed freedom. After writing a novel, Killer.com, about the potential dangers of the Internet, Kenneth Eade reflects more about the implications of Internet freedon in an article called, “The Devil in the Dark Net.

An interesting article in SkyNews explores the dangers and benefits of consumer reviews of businesses. For both individuals and businesses, there is a line drawn by common decency and a line drawn by the Courts? Are these parallel lines or do they diverge at some momentous point.

EXCERPT FROM KILLER.COM

BRENT MARKS, NOW AN ATTORNEY, HAD A TASTE FOR DEFENDING THE UNDERDOG SINCE HE WAS VERY YOUNG- AND THE FIRST UNDERDOG HE HAD TO DEFEND WAS HIMSELF, MAINLY BECAUSE OF HIS ORIGINAL GIVEN SURNAME, MARQUEZ, THAT MADE HIM A TARGET OF PREJUDICED BULLIES.  HE STOOD MANY OF THEM DOWN, AS ILLUSTRATED BY THIS BIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT DESCRIBED IN THIS PROLOGUE TO KILLER.COM.

AFTER SO MANY INCIDENTS OF THIS NATURE, EVENTUALLY COMPELLING HIS FATHER TO CHANGE THEIR LAST NAME, IT EXPLAINS HOW IT BECAME ENGRAINED  IN HIS NATURE TO TACKLE ISSUES OFTEN AFFECTING THE WEAK AND DEFENSELESS. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS A LAWYER, A PROFESSION OFTEN CITED FOR GREED AND SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE FAVORITISM TO THE RICH, BRENT MARKS WAS NOT THAT GRAVELY TEMPTED.

ALTHOUGH NOT DENYING HIMSELF SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF HIS PROFESSION, HE ACTED AS THOUGH HE HAD TAKEN A KIND OF HIPPOCRATIC OATH, SHARING HIS TALENTS WITH CASES THAT WOULD HELP HIS CLIENTS AT THE EXPENSE OF HIS FINANCIAL WELL-BEING, INNER PEACE AND EVEN LIFE ITSELF.

The boys lined up in six squads of seven, dressed in the tomato-red shorts and bleached white shirts of their Hale Jr. High School gym uniforms. It was a bright southern California day, the sun blazing high above the field where the boys were in line. Each squad had a leader who answered to Coach Vince Nieman, who was nothing more than a grown-up boy himself: a has-been, first string high school football player who used to be good enough to land himself a spot on the bench in exchange for a college football scholarship. Now he wasn’t good enough for anything but teaching P.E. Brent’s squad leader was a C- student named Russ Carlton, a bulky, red-haired, freckle-faced bully whom, even in middle school, every one of his teachers would have voted as most likely to become a criminal – that is, except for Coach Nieman, who found his brawn useful for crowd control.

Brent hung his head down and filed in. He hated P.E. and made no secret about it.

“You’re a fag, Marquez!” Russ Carlton spouted.

“A dickless fag!” chimed in another.

“You’re a dickless fag who sucks dick!” Now there was a chorus.

“Do it, Steinman!” Russ commanded.

“That was the cue for Gary Steinman, a skinny, pathetic-looking kid with a generous brown bush of frizzy, crumpled hair, to fall in line behind Brent. With both hands he grabbed the waistband of Brent’s shorts and underwear and pulled down with all his strength, until they were dangling around Brent’s ankles. Gary’s efforts were rewarded by a cacophony of belly laughter from everyone.

As Brent pulled up his shorts and began to run away, Russ affirmed to the group: “See, I told you he was a fag!”

“Yeah, what a pussy!” exclaimed Gary.

Brent ran past Coach Nieman and into the locker room.

“Where do you think you’re going, Marquez?” asked the Coach. Brent ignored him. Then he turned to Russ. “Carlton, go get Marquez and bring him back out here.”

“Come on, Steinman,” commanded Russ as he ran after Brent into the locker room. Steinman followed him like a trained dog.

Brent spun the lock on his gym locker and opened it. The locker room smelled: a combination of the stench of armpits, sweaty balls, and dirty stale socks. He was just putting a leg into his jeans when the two arrived.

“Suit up, Marquez. Coach wants you back out there.”

Brent pretended not to hear Russ and kept putting on his street clothes.

“What are you, deaf, faggot?” asked Steinman.

“I heard you. I’m not going.”

“Get him, Steinman,” Russ said as he shoved Gary Steinman into Brent, slamming Brent’s back against the locker. Like a cobra, Brent came back at Steinman, grabbing his left arm, which he twisted behind his back, and applying pressure upward, causing Steinman to wince as he turned and smashed his nose against the locker door.

“Who’s the faggot now, Steinman?” Brent bellowed into his ear.

“Let him go, Marquez, or I’ll fuck you up,” threatened Russ Carlton. Brent ignored Carlton and kept up the pressure.

“What’s going on here?” Coach Nieman’s voice boomed through the locker room. Brent wouldn’t let go. He pushed harder on Steinman’s arm until he thought it would break and ground his face into the locker. Steinman’s wire-rimmed glasses bent at the nose, fell off, and hit the filthy locker room floor.

“No fighting, Marquez. Let him go, now!” barked Nieman. Brent let go of Steinman and gave him a push to the floor. “You two: back outside. Marquez: to the VP’s office, on the double!”

“This isn’t over, faggot!” said Russ, walking backwards and pointing at Brent threateningly.

That was the cue for Gary Steinman, a skinny, pathetic-looking kid with a generous brown bush of frizzy, crumpled hair, to fall in line behind Brent. With both hands he grabbed the waistband of Brent’s shorts and underwear and pulled down with all his strength, until they were dangling around Brent’s ankles. Gary’s efforts were rewarded by a cacophony of belly laughter from everyone. As Brent pulled up his shorts and began to run away, Russ affirmed to the group: “See, I told you he was a fag!” “Yeah, what a pussy!” exclaimed Gary.

NOVELIST KEN EADE TAKES ON POLICE BRUTALITY IN “UNREASONABLE FORCE”

“In ’Unreasonable Force’, Kenneth Eade manages to tackle some important topics for today’s American society: tolerance, prejudice, violence, self-defense. Readers will immediately relate to the main characters and try to find answers to the intriguing questions their actions raise. Yes, ’Unreasonable Force’, is a fast-paced, action-packed legal thriller, but it’s also much more than that. It speaks directly to the readers, drawing their attention towards what’s happening in reality, around them, each day of their life.” – NY Books Examiner

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK, :UNREASONABLE FORCE” BY KEN EADE

William rolled down his window as one patrolman approached the driver’s side and blasted William with an assault of light, which stung his eyes. He blinked and averted his gaze.

“Look at me, sir,” commanded the Officer. He seemed to be in his 30s, although William could not tell because they all looked alike in their uniforms and matching caps.

The other cop took a position to the rear of the Escalade, on the passenger’s side, and shone his light into the vehicle, checking the interior.

“Got an open container!” he called out.

“License and registration,” demanded the first cop, steadily training the floodlight in William’s face.

“It’s in the glove box. I’m going to reach over and get it, okay?”

“Just keep your hands where I can see them,” said the officer.

William slowly and carefully withdrew his paperwork from the glove compartment and handed it to the policeman, who beamed the flashlight on his license, then back into William’s face.

“Do you have to shine that thing in my face? I’m sensitive to bright light.” The officer didn’t respond.

“Step out of the car, please.”

“What for?”

As William got out of the car, he could see TJ and Fenton exiting also, their hands on their heads. They were directed to the driver’s side, where the second cop put them against the car and was patting them down.

“Turn around, hands on the vehicle.”

“Wait a minute, I…”

“Turn around, hands on the vehicle. I won’t say it again.”

William turned around and put his hands on the car. He could feel the officer’s hand going up his leg. He turned his head and noticed that the cop’s right hand was on his service pistol. Great – trigger happy.

“Turn around!”

William turned around and felt the cop reaching into his pocket, taking out his wallet. He looked to see Fenton and TJ, who were sitting on the ground, handcuffed.

“Public urination is a misdemeanor offense,” said the police officer to William as he examined the contents of his wallet. “So is having an open container of alcohol.” “What open container?” “Have you been drinking?” “No, no. I’m the designated driver. Look officer, I’m not under the influence of alcohol.”

“Did I ask you for your opinion, nigger?” “Excuse me? Did you say ‘nigger’?” “I didn’t say anything. You said it. And isn’t that what you people call each other?” “Well, if we people did, that doesn’t give you the right to say it.” “You ain’t got any rights here, boy, ‘cept the right to remain silent, and I suggest you use it.” “Why? Am I under arrest?” “Stand with your legs together, head back, arms out straight. Close your eyes.” William complied.

William repeated the maneuver. The cop withdrew his baton and forced William’s legs apart with it. “You told me to stand with my legs together. I’ll do whatever you say. Just don’t hit me with that.” “Shut up. Now I want you to walk a straight line, heel to toe, until I tell you to stop and turn.” He pushed William forcefully with the baton in the back, whereupon William pushed it away with his hand.

“You don’t need to keep hitting me with that stick. I’m doing everything you…” In an instant, the cop smacked William in the knee with the baton in a rage. William felt a fire in his knee as he heard it crack, lost his balance, and fell. The cop kicked William in his balls and then his stomach, which made him heave. “You barfed on my shoe, nigger!” There was nothing after that, only bits and pieces. The only thing William could remember was the deafening pop as the gun went off, and the cop’s partner hitting the ground like a fallen bowling pin.

Certainly the situation with the continuous use of deadly force in police confrontations with Afro-Americans has helped grow the movement, Black Lives Matter. In this article in the Dissident Voice organization’s website, Ken Eade argues why they do,

But the confrontations with police brutality and the militarization of the police are only a series of steps in a long line of attempts to dissolve citizen rights in the United States.  In the following interview, Ken Eade explains the tragic degree of compromise that has already taken place.

THE BILL OF RIGHTS – HAVE WE LOST THEM ALREADY?

Ken has often been compared to attorney/novelist John Grisham. This is his take on these comments.

“John Grisham is famous for saying: ’I always try to tell a good story, one with a compelling plot that will keep the pages turning. That is my first and primary goal. Sometimes I can tackle an issue-homelessness, tobacco litigation, insurance fraud, the death penalty-and wrap a good story around it.’ That is exactly what I try to do in my books. Not only do I want to tell you a thrilling story that you will love to read, I also hope you come away with it having learned something important.”
